  • Felix Miranda Are the New Blackfish Regulations Biased ? This is the time of the year that I look forward to some late Winter Blackfishing. Unfortunately because of the new Emergency Regulations Adopted by New York's Department of Environmental Conservation (D.E.C.) in January, the season will run from October 8, 2012 thru December 4, 2012 !! The January 17 thru April 30 Season has been ELIMINATED !! When in 2011 It was from October 1st thru December 20th . I Just Cant Believe that The January 17 thru April 30 season has been ELIMINATED !! That's a Dramatic Reduction of 70 Days !! To add insult to injury, the 14" size limit has been raised to 16"s, but at least the Bag Limit of 4 fish per day Remains the Same !! How do you Expect The Party Boats to Survive !! The Bait and Tackle ShopsCant Attract Customers and Our Families are Affected on Many sides. What really Frustrates me is that the Commercial Fishery Isn't Sharing That Burden With Us !! It's OUR FISHERY ! A One Inch Size Increase on Their Harvest and a Shorter Season Isn't Sharing the Burden. I'm Sure that as a Collective We Could Establish A Fair Regulation. After All it's Our Fishery. So We Are All In It Together !! I Guess Ultimately It's Politics. I Don't Think we Should Blame The D.E.C. Unfortunately the Commercial Fisheries were Very Well Represented at the Hearing, M.R.A.C. meetings and on The Council. Recreational Anglers were Represented by Industry People but Not Politicians. (We Gotta Think Match The Hatch) To Our Dismay, it Obviously Wasn't Enough. We MUST attend these Public Hearings if Our Voices Want to be Heard !! If Over-Harvesting is the Real Concern of The Atlantic States Marines Fisheries Commission, then Why was this Decision Only Targeting Us. If Our Voices aren't heard, the D.E.C. may Make These Regulations PERMANENT !!
